I would like to buy my husband a digital camera, but I have been told my computer has a serial port connection and I cannot buy a camera that has a USB connection to go on it.  Is there any adapter that can be used to do this, as all the cameras I think he would like are USB.   Serial port cameras (The only one I can find is a Jenoptik 350 Video/Still camera) only seem to have a very low resolution, and I do not think this will be high enough for decent picture reproduction.

I would be very grateful if you could answer this query as soon as possible, as I do want to buy him a decent camera.

dp-now.com:

There is a very simple remedy – most good digital cameras have removable memory cards; the two most common types being SmartMedia and Compact Flash. Companies like Kingston:

can supply a memory card reader that connects to a PC via the parallel printer port. It’s unlikely your husband’s PC doesn’t have a parallel port.

My only concern is that if his PC is so old that it doesn’t have USB ports as standard, it may not be very suitable for editing and viewing high quality digital images. Without enough memory and a fast enough processor, viewing and editing images could be very slow.

If you can find out the processor and memory (RAM and hard disk) specifications, I can let you know if I think it’s powerful enough.

Our recommendation is a minimum of Windows 98, a Pentium 166MHz CPU and at least 128MB RAM, plus 1GB free gard disk space.
